Types of Massage

Craniosacral therapy is a light touch approach that can create dramatic improvements in your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole body health and performance. The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord and includes the skull, face and mouth which make up the cranium, and the sacrum (tailbone). Craniosacral Therapy has proven effective for the relief of migraine headaches, chronic neck and back pain, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, central nervous system disorders, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), Scoliosis, and fibromyalgia as well many others.

When most people think of massage, they think of Swedish Massage. Swedish Massage is a classic western massage technique which combines various techniques specially focused on relaxing muscles and applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones. This is followed by kneading and long smooth strokes to improve circulation and return blood flow to the heart.

The techniques applied in Swedish Massage are gentle and rhythmic. Five basic strokes, all flowing toward the heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. A combination of kneading, rolling, vibrational, percussive and tapping movements, usually accompanied by the application of oil, to reduce friction on the skin, Swedish Massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes, and it speeds the venous return of un-oxygenated blood and toxins from the extremities. It stretches the ligaments and tendons and keeps them supple and pliable.

Even though the pressure is relatively light, this treatment still has therapeutic benefits including: an increased blood flow, increased muscle tone, improved oxygenation to the muscles, and of course relaxation. Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and simultaneously soothes the nerves. It reduces both emotional and physical stress, and therefore it is recommended in a regular stress management program. It has many additional specific medical uses.

Deep Tissue Massage releases chronic patterns of tension in the body through long slow strokes and deep pressure. This technique improves body alignment and freedom of movement.

Deep Tissue Massage is a massage of the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissues of the body. Deep Tissue Massage is used to provide a therapeutic effect by massaging all layers of tissue from superficial (closer to the skin) to deep (closer to the bone). It relaxes the muscles and rids them of built up metabolic waste, and helps release adhesions between muscles and connective tissue. It can also be useful in preventing scar tissue build up from injuries to muscles and connective tissues.

Sports Massage focuses on the muscles relevant to a particular athletic activity. It is usually more vigorous and deeper than Swedish Massage.

Reflexology focuses the on hands and feet, working pressure points which correspond with specific areas of the body.

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese technique based on the principles of acupuncture using finger point pressure on specific points along the body. Some of these pressure points are believed to affect a specific part of the body, while others are more general in their effect. Chinese cultures believe these points to be junctures of meridian pathways that carry energy called chi. Acupressure helps to remove energy blockages within the meridian pathway by diffusing the toxic build up that accumulates in the muscle tissue and joints, causing stiffness and pain. Acupressure stimulates and activates the body's own energies to help fight illness and restore harmony to the body.

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT or Trigger Point Therapy) is a system of soft tissue manipulation technique that seeks to balance the nervous system with the musculoskeletal system. This is one of the methods I use to help clients experiencing pain, it is very effective. Stated in the simplest terms, I release trigger points in muscles, and help correct muscular imbalances that can cause pain and discomfort. Additionally, NMT uses soft tissue manipulations on tendons and other connective tissue to assist in muscle balance. NMT also addresses nerve pain caused by pressure from soft tissues including muscles, fascia, and tendons. NMT is effective in helping with conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD), Back pain, Neck pain, Scoliosis, Sciatica, Fibromyalgia (FMS), and Migraines.

Pregnancy Massage has gained tremendous popularity by helping the mother to remain comfortable during her pregnancy and in many cases have an easier delivery. Pregnancy Massage relieves muscle spasms and cramps associated with the stress of extra weight bearing and physical changes that occur during pregnancy. It also reduces stress and teaches the mother to relax. Relaxation is one of the keys to labor and delivery.

The gestation process is enhanced through increasing blood circulation, lymph circulation, reducing edema and increasing cellular respiration. Pregnancy massage also assists in reducing the stress in the weight bearing joints and muscles, helping to enhance breathing capacity which is needed during labor and delivery.

Corporate Chair Massage or seated massage, is performed while the client remains fully clothed and seated in a specially designed massage chair. The massage chair allows the Massage Therapist to massage the clients head, neck, back, and arms in a typical 15 minute session. The high portability of the massage chair and the fact that the clients are fully clothed means that massage sessions can be completed almost anywhere.

Chair Massage is a popular attraction at trade shows and conventions. Chair Massage makes a great gift for employees or special clients. Receiving chair massage in the office has been shown to reduce stress and increase employee productivity.
